Description of Work

Stop by the Connections Gallery now through August 8, 2014 at NCRC, Building 18 to see the exhibition Curiosity: Inside/Outside with work by fiber artist, Yunjung Kang, recent graduate from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Due to her exciting but unexpected move to New York, Yunjung will need to close her show early. She will offer a gallery talk on August 8th at 11:30AM in the gallery at the west end of the NCRC tunnel. Light refreshments will be served. The show will conclude that afternoon.

Yunjung Kang is a fiber, mixed media and visual artist creating two and three-dimensional forms in both drawings and sculpture. She was born in Busan, South Korea where she received her BFA (2007) and MFA (2009) from Dong-A University, Busan. She mainly studied traditional textile techniques such as tapestry weaving and quilting in the programs. In 2010 she left to study abroad in Philadelphia at The University of the Arts and accepted an apprenticeship at the Fabric Workshop and Museum.

To continue her exploration of textile arts, Yunjung moved to Michigan and studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where she graduated from in 2014. During her time in southeast Michigan, Yunjung’s work has been shown at several shows: ArtPrize 2013 (Grand Rapids Art Museum), Annual Scholarship Exhibition 2014 (Detroit Artist Market) and the North American International Auto Show 2014 (Cobo Center, Detroit). The piece “-holic II,” a smaller version of the large red wall sculpture on view at NCRC, is included in the collection of Lincoln Motor Company.

The work in Curiosity: Inside/Outside is inspired by the human body.
