The Lab Swap Days support U-M’s waste reduction goal by enabling surplus lab materials to be used in other campus labs rather than being sent out for disposal. These in-person "swap" events will enable the research community to rehome lightly used, non-expired lab materials, consumables, glassware, and small equipment in a convenient, on-site process.

Last year, the Office of Campus Sustainability partnered with Medical School Facilities and Environment, Health and Safety to coordinate “Lab Swap Days” within the medical school. These events encouraged lab staff to conduct lab clean-outs and donate surplus supplies, while giving them a chance to obtain free gently used materials. With waste diverted from the landfill totaling over 1,900 pounds and researchers saving more than $42,000!
