U-M Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR)
The Office of the Vice President for Research has central responsibility for nurturing excellence in research, scholarship and creative activity across the entire University of Michigan campus. OVPR oversees research policy, provides central administrative services in support of faculty research, and manages activities related to compliance and the responsible conduct of research. OVPR also oversees several independent interdisciplinary research units, as well as units that support technology transfer and economic engagement. In addition, OVPR works with deans and department chairs to develop and support interdisciplinary research initiatives and symposia. For more information, visit OVPR.
U-M Tech Transfer
U-M Tech Transfer is responsible for transferring University technologies to the market to generate benefits for the University, the community and the general public.
Since 2000, U-M Tech Transfer has worked with faculty, entrepreneurs and businesses to license hundreds of technologies to industry and launch more than 100 high-potential new start-ups based on U-M technology, a record among the top 10 universities. U-M Tech Transfer includes:
- Licensing
- Business formation
- Legal, marketing and administrative professionals, who, as a team, assess, protect and market new technologies for our business and venture partners.
Venture Center / Michigan Venture Accelerator
U-M Tech Transfer’s Venture Center is the one-stop hub for entrepreneurs and venture firms looking for U-M start-up opportunities. The Venture Center offers talent, funding and other venture creation resources, including lab and office space in the Michigan Venture Accelerator at NCRC.
The Michigan Venture Accelerator is a business incubator focusing exclusively on commercializing University of Michigan research and intellectual property. Accelerator tenants will have access to Tech Transfer's Venture Center to help them refine business models, attract investors, acquire gap funding and connect to talent that enhances the company's quality and sustainability. Accelerator tenants can also seek guidance from seasoned entrepreneurs in Tech Transfer's Mentors in Residence program.

U-M Tech Transfer serves the entire Ann Arbor campus, U-M Dearborn and U-M Flint. Its main office is on the NCRC campus with satellite offices on North Campus and Central Campus.

The University of Michigan welcomes the opportunity to work with companies at NCRC on significant research collaborations or on public / private partnerships that align with the University's research, education and economic development mission. Companies considering locating at NCRC should have a sound rationale as to how the company's activities fit with this mission and how both the University and company could benefit from the facilities, equipment, and research collaboration offered by the University. Specifically, in reviewing industry applicants, NCRC leadership will consider the following general criteria:
- University faculty and students must derive significant benefit from the interaction with NCRC. Companies should have identified researcher(s) and/or University units that they wish to collaborate with and indicate an intent to enter into a collaborative research agreement.
- The business should have a detailed research and engagement plan that indicates how they intend to develop the collaboration opportunity with their University partners. The plan should include funding requirements and other related information.
- The business should also highlight opportunities for significant economic development outcomes.
The University of Michigan Business Engagement Center focuses on connecting companies with faculty, students, and facilities and can work with you to develop your company's proposed collaboration at NCRC.
