Research by the Numbers: Using Citation-Based Impact Metrics and Tools
Designed for a health sciences audience, this session will provide an introduction to common publication metrics used to quantify and demonstrate scholarly impact. Participants will leave with an understanding of citation metrics, alternative metrics, tools used to gather this data, and guidelines for best practices. Topics covered will include core citation-based metrics used for individual researchers, groups, and journals, and their strengths and limitations.
The second hour provides time for guided exploratory work to generate commonly used metrics at the article, author, and journal level using tools such as Scopus and iCite. The second hour is optional. Attendees will need to bring a laptop for this hour.
