Description of Work
Carole Harris is a fiber artist, working primarily in the art of quilt medium. Her work has extended the boundaries of traditional quilting. Her process is improvisational. She lets the fabric and color lead her on a rhythmic journey, using combinations of commercially printed cottons, silks, linen, hand dyed, hand painted, vintage fabrics and paper thrown in. These materials are cut up, overlaid, hand stitched, burned, painted, repositioned, until she knows that she has arrived at her destination of a densely layered composition. Her work is included in many private and institutional collections and has been exhibited extensively worldwide. A recent highlight was her inclusion in the exhibition “The Sum of Many Parts: 25 Quiltmakers in the 21st Century America” which toured China, where she was a guest lecturer. Recent local exhibitions include a solo show at the G.R. N’Namdi Gallery in Detroit and group exhibitions at the Detroit Artist’s Market, 9339 Gallery in Hamtramck and the Abstract Exhibition at the Janice Charach Gallery. She has also received numerous awards including a Kresge Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship. Carole Harris earned a B.F.A. from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1966.
