The University of Michigan takes pride in the many ways we contribute to our community. For example, the University of Michigan is the most significant driver of our local and regional economy by employing nearly 40,000 faculty and staff. U-M has added 4,300 jobs in the past five years alone. More than $1 billion of U-M's annual research expenditures have resulted in the founding of 93 new private companies in the past 10 years. And, thanks to U-M, a new company is created, on the average, every 5 weeks.
The University is also the largest tenant of commercial property in the area and thus contributes through rent paid – an estimated $4.67 million to local taxing units every year. The University of Michigan also supports and makes frequent financial contributions to fire services, roads and transit and other elements of the municipal infrastructure that supports the institution.
